Ticks and tick-borne diseases are important animal-health challenges for livestock keepers. Addressing them calls for locally relevant research, veterinary expertise and practical approaches that can be assessed for safety and effectiveness.
Alfasan Uganda and Makerere University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity (CoVAB) entered a collaborative initiative on tick and tick-borne disease research in 2021. The work brings together university scientists and the company around development of an anti-tick vaccine.
Research and product development take time. This article describes the collaboration and its research focus; it does not imply that a vaccine is approved or commercially available. Farmers should continue to seek advice from veterinary professionals for tick control and animal treatment.
