Research & partnership
A Makerere University and Alfasan Uganda partnership set out to manufacture test batches of a locally developed anti-tick vaccine candidate.
On 19 March 2021, Makerere University and Alfasan Uganda signed a memorandum of understanding to facilitate production of test batches of an anti-tick vaccine candidate developed by researchers at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity (CoVAB).
The partnership connects university research with local manufacturing capability. Makerere University stated that it retains the vaccine patent. At the time of the announcement, the next step described was manufacture under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) for further evaluation; this story does not imply that a commercial vaccine is available or that farmer outcomes have been measured.
Why this work matters
Makerere researchers described acaricide resistance and environmental contamination as challenges in tick control. Vaccine research may offer an additional tool alongside responsible animal-health practices, subject to successful testing, regulatory review, and appropriate use.
Our role: manufacturing collaboration for test batches, with research ownership remaining with Makerere University.
